A 5-Minute Headphone Break for Stress at Work

Back-to-back meetings, constant notifications, no real pause? Here is a simple 5-minute headphone break to step away from work stress, designed by osteopath Éric Rosati.

Back-to-back meetings, a full inbox, notifications that never stop: for many of us, the working day leaves no room for a real pause. We end up "resting" by scrolling our phone, which keeps the mind just as busy.

A short, structured break can change the feel of a day. Here is a simple five-minute routine you can do at your desk, in a meeting room or in your car before going home.

💡 The goal is not to stop stress for good, but to give your mind a real break between two demands, a few times a day. Short and regular beats long and rare.

The 5-minute headphone break, step by step

1. Minute 0: close the loop

Before you stop, write down in one line where you are in your current task. Your mind will let go more easily if it knows where to pick up again.

2. Minute 1: change position

Push your chair back, put both feet flat on the floor, let your shoulders drop. If you can, find a quieter spot: an empty meeting room, a bench outside, your parked car.

3. Minutes 1 to 4: headphones on

Put on your headphones, close your eyes and start a sound programme at a comfortable volume. No screen, no information, just listening. The Anti-stress programme was designed for exactly these short breaks in a busy day.

4. Minute 4: slow your breathing

In the last minute, breathe in for five seconds and out for five seconds. Cardiac coherence is simple, discreet and easy to repeat.

5. Minute 5: come back gently

Open your eyes, stretch, drink a glass of water. Then go back to the line you wrote down at minute 0.

6. Plan it, don't wait for it

Put two or three breaks in your calendar: mid-morning, after lunch, late afternoon. A break you plan is a break you actually take.

“In my practice, many people tell me they never really stop during the day. Yet five real minutes, with headphones on and eyes closed, are often enough to change how the next hour feels. It is one of the simplest habits I know.”

— Éric Rosati, osteopath, founder of Vitality Inside

Making it a habit

Start with one break a day for a week, at the same time. Once it feels natural, add a second one. Consistency matters far more than duration.

If work stress is constant, affects your sleep or your health, or lasts for weeks, talk to your doctor or occupational health service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really take a break in only five minutes?

Yes. Short, regular breaks are easier to fit into a working day than long ones, and they help create a real separation between tasks.

Do I need special headphones?

Any comfortable headphones will do. Over-ear headphones give a more immersive listening experience and block out some of the office noise.

When is the best time for a break?

Mid-morning, after lunch and late afternoon are good moments. The best time is the one you can protect every day.

Does this replace professional help?

No. It is a wellness habit. If stress is persistent or overwhelming, consult a health professional.

Vitality Inside programmes are a wellness practice. They do not replace medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
